Laurel Alternatives for Law Firms: Comparing AI Timekeeping Software

Compare documented workflows, then test the fit with your own lawyers and billing environment.

Laurel alternatives

AI timekeeping

Software comparison

Law firms evaluating Laurel alternatives should compare how each product captures work, supports lawyer review, and hands approved time to billing. MIRA, PointOne, Ajax, Billables AI, and Intapp Time are candidates to investigate alongside Laurel. The right shortlist depends on the firm's systems, review habits, and implementation requirements.

This guide is published by MIRA. It summarizes public vendor materials checked on October 15, 2026; it is not an independent product test or a ranking based on measured performance. The questions below are intended to help firms run their own evaluation.

Start with the reason for evaluating an alternative

A firm may need better adoption, different integration coverage, a more convenient review workspace, clearer commercial terms, or a different governance model. Write down that requirement before requesting demonstrations. Otherwise, every product can appear suitable while the original problem remains untested.

Separate an operational concern from a product limitation. Lawyers might enter time late because the review process is unclear, because the system is difficult to use, or because source activity is incomplete. Each explanation calls for a different test.

A shortlist organized around the workflow

Use the vendor links to verify current capabilities and packaging. A public description is evidence of the vendor's positioning, rather than proof of how a product will perform at your firm.

Can lawyers review a representative day and release approved time to the firm's billing environment?

Automatic work collection, compliance review, and work-time intelligence

How well does the proposed workflow handle your entry habits and billing connection?

How much correction is required before a draft becomes a usable entry?

Flexible time-entry methods and compliance within an enterprise legal environment

How does the proposed configuration fit the firm's existing systems and administration model?

Do not infer that a feature is absent because a vendor does not describe it on one webpage. Request an explicit answer and include the requirement in the pilot.

Compare the same working day

Give each vendor an equivalent, appropriately approved test scenario: a short email exchange, document review, a meeting, an interruption, two similar matters, and a task that must remain non-billable. Ask the demonstrator to show the correction process as well as the initial suggestion.

The most revealing questions concern exceptions. Can the lawyer find the source of a suggestion? Can an incorrect matter be changed? Can unrelated activity be excluded? What happens when a billing transfer is rejected? A smooth demonstration should leave enough time to examine these cases.

Evaluate privacy and integrations in writing

Activity capture and billing release are different connections. A product may read work signals from a DMS while sending approved entries to a finance system. Document both paths, their permissions, and the people responsible for them.

Ask for the collection scope, retention arrangements, access rules, model-use terms, deployment requirements, and current assurance evidence. Confirm the exact billing product, version, and deployment involved. An integration logo alone does not answer those questions.

An evaluation cycle moves from baseline through testing and review to a decision.

Keep the incumbent in the pilot

There is value in testing the current system against a clarified process before switching. If clearer review responsibilities solve the issue, a migration may create unnecessary work. If a gap remains, the same baseline makes the alternative easier to assess.

Evidence to collect

How it informs the decision

Review effort and correction reasons

Shows whether capture reduces reconstruction or creates new cleanup

Same-day release and unresolved exceptions

Shows whether the workflow can be sustained

Accepted billing transfers and reconciled totals

Shows whether the handoff is reliable

Written commercial scope

Makes subscriptions, integration work, support, and renewal terms comparable

Use the software RFP checklist to record requirements. The 2026 AI timekeeping comparison provides broader category context.

Where MIRA may fit

MIRA may merit a pilot when the firm wants to bring time review into Microsoft Teams or Outlook while retaining its existing billing system. Its FAQ describes supported activity sources and billing integrations. Confirm the scope for your own environment and use the current pricing page to identify the appropriate plan.

The decision should follow demonstrated workflow fit. Any expected reduction in missed work or administrative effort should be measured against the firm's own baseline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Time by Ping a separate Laurel alternative?

No. Laurel's privacy policy identifies the company as Time By Ping, Inc., doing business as Laurel. Comparing the two names as separate current products would be misleading.

No. First identify the unresolved requirement, test the current workflow, and compare alternatives only where they address a demonstrated gap.

It can inform a shortlist. Accuracy, review effort, integration behavior, adoption, and total cost still need firm-specific verification.

Request the same written scope from each vendor. Treat an unavailable public price as a commercial question to resolve, rather than evidence that one product is cheaper.
